Kishtwar Cloudburst: Six dead, at least 28 missing due to cloudburst; PM Modi & Amit Shah assure assistance

Kishtwar, July 28: In the unfortunate incident, a cloudburst swept away over half-a-dozen houses in a remote village in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir early Wednesday. According to the officials, at least 7 people have passed away in the natural disaster while 30 people are reported to be missing after it.

Kishtwar town is around 200km from Jammu while Dacchan is a remote and hilly area in the Kishtwar district. Police, army, NDRF, civil administration, and locals launched a rescue operation in the area. Moreover, the Indian Army has also sent a 22-member party led by Capt Vivek Chauhan for a rescue operation in Kishtwar.
  
 
“Accordingly, a party of 1-1-20 under Captain Vivek Chauhan ex-Sondar COB 17 RR has been launched at 7 am. SHO and 07 Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel from Sirsi police station have also been launched,” said a statement from the Indian Army.
 
Giving them information about the incident, SSP Kishtwar Shafqat Bhat told them that four bodies have been recovered while a number of people, with reports coming in suggesting the number to be around 36, are missing.
 
Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation and assured that all possible assistance is being made available in the affected areas. He said the central government is closely monitoring the situation in Kishtwar and Kargil following cloudbursts.
 
Apart from PM Modi Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to LG & DGP of Jammu & Kashmir regarding the cloudburst in Kishtwar. "I have spoken to the LG & DGP of Jammu & Kashmir regarding the cloudburst in Kishtwar. State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), Army & local administration are carrying out the rescue operation. NDRF is also reaching there. Our priority is to save as many lives as possible,” he said.
